Scott's Favorite Record #4/#5
Scott’s favorite records #4. One of the defining records of the punk/hardcore genre, Minor Threat’s “First two 7”s” LP is one of the first punk albums I bought.

I grew to love this record (as most fans of hardcore do), but when I first got it, I didn’t know what to think of it “This dude is just screaming”. It took a while to grow on me, but it definitely did.
This is a first pressing, as identified by the red cover and metallic silver printing on the back cover. I paid $4.99 for it at Believe In Music on South Westnedge in Kalamazoo, in 1984. #dischordrecords #minorthreat
Scott’s favorite records #5. Soul Asylum, Made to be Broken. First pressing, 1986. I bought Made to be Broken on cassette, originally, when that was a thing.

. They were on Twin Tone Records, which was kind of Husker Du adjacent. In fact, this album was produced by Bob Mould of Husker Du. Anyway, I think I bought the tape because I thought the name of the band and album were cool and sounded punk. To my surprise, this album isn’t really punk at all, but it’s amazing. Some obvious Replacements influence, and some pre “alt-country” sounds, dare I say, but it’s really just a great rock record with great songs.
I got this vinyl copy sometime in the early 90s. Pretty sure my friend Becky @tinnywords secured it for me during one of her tenures as a Record Store agent (hence my name on the sticker and the ridiculous $2.49 price tag—thanks Becky). I saw Soul Asylum in Hollywood in 1987 (before they became MTV big) in a small club with a small crowd, but they were incredible. My wife saw them last year and although she wasn’t a big fan going in, she said they were really great. I highly recommend this album. #soulasylum #vinyl #recordcollecting
