Categorically, I do not like Ska, but I love The Specials and here we are for Scott’s favorite records #10.
The Specials Live does not include the smash hit “Enjoy Yourself (It’s later than you think) but it is a great live recording of a bunch of great songs. I saw The Specials on late night TV, way back when you didn’t see non-top 40 bands on TV, and I thought they were amazing. In my mind, the song I saw then was “Nite Klub”, but all I can find is “Gangsters” on Saturday Night Live in 1980. Either way, The Specials got my teenaged brain stoked then and my post-teenaged, arrested-developmentally-enabled brain stoked now. Not sure where or when I bought this record. Sorry.
Scott’s favorite records #11 and the return of Vinnie the MinPin. Like the Shellac LP, this Rites of Spring record was also heavily damaged by our first miniature pinscher Vinnie.
Gail and I got Vinnie in 1998, a few weeks before we got our first apartment. He was the coolest little dog and a total psycho. He did the funniest stuff but was also a nightmare to deal with. He would knock my beer over on purpose and try to drink it. He once ate a cassette tape and pooped put the whole thing all across the floor. He was was super cuddly and fun with us and he loved Gail’s parents, but absolutely NO ONE else stood a chance with this dog. He was insane, but he was great. We’ve had so many dogs, but never another like him. Thank gawd.
Anyway, he ate the corner of this record cover one day when he was, I guess, bored. The vinyl inside is in perfect condition and if you don’t know, this is one of greatest collections of songs ever recorded. This is a third pressing edition as identified by the “$6 Postpaid” price on the back cover and “Made In France” notation. I bought it at Boogie Records in Kalamazoo for $6.30 (scalpers!).
