AMYL AND THE SNIFFERS: LIVE ALBUM, TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCE
Ever since Stew Johnson turned me onto Amyl and the Sniffers I have been a big fan! It’s one of those bands that immediately grabs you with their intensely high energy, punk sound. Hailing from Melbourne, Austraila vocalist Amy Taylor, bassist Gus Romer, drummer Bryce Wilson and guitarist Declan Mehrtens unleashed their first ep, Giddy Up, in 2016.
But that was then. Let’s talk now. Like right now. After three full-length albums Amy and the boys did something a little different. They made a film called ‘Truth or Consequence’ along with an accompanied album from the live show. The live show was a country-influenced set of their own songs, two unreleased tracks and a cover of Slim Dusty’s (Australian country music singer-songwriter), “Lights on the Hill”. Where was the live show recorded? I’m glad I asked. It was a small Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles called El Coyote.
The film, Directed by John Angus Stewart and shot on Kodak film, cut back from the live set to behind-the-scenes moments of the group chats and telling bad jokes. I think my favorite songs were the opening song, “Big Dreams” that set the pace for the show as the band looked like they were have a blast and “Me and the Girls” which they changed the lyrics from “Me and the girls are drunk at the airport” to “Me and the girls are drunk at the pig farm”. I loved the dive bar feel of this show and had me wanted more when they finished. I'm glad I was able to see the theatrical release of this.
As a bonus, after the feature film was finished, they showed “Live at Ally Pally 2025” which was a massive sold-out show at Alexandra Palace in London.
