I Built a Bike, Dave Hill Rode It Onstage, and Someone Won It

Somewhere out there, a person is sleeping approximately three feet from a bicycle signed by comedian/musician Dave Hill and the members of Puscifer. I tracked down the winner of this eBay auction because I mean, she has a piece of rock-and-roll/BMX memorabilia that exists purely because Dave Hill decided a bike needed autographs more than it needed sweet jumps. I am always curious when someone wins an auction and wanted to ask them … why. And I got my chance!
The short story: I built this bike up, handed it off to Dave, and then watched him ride it on stage when he opened for the Puscifer tour. For the BMX nerds out there, the bike is a custom Laird Frame packed with Merritt BMX parts. Now to the interview with winner, Lisa from Austin...
What made you want to bid on the bike?
"A couple of reasons. I thought it was super sweet that Dave was donating the money to charity, and I am a person who believes in signs because I'm weird like that. So, I took it as a sign that he picked a charity local to me that I should put my top bid in. Plus, of course, I'm a huge fan of Puscifer and a new fan of Dave so getting all the autographs was the icing! And lastly, I thought it was cool that it was built by a BMX pro!"
How did you feel when you won the bidding?
"I was super excited and a little bit surprised that no one bid higher!"
Dave had all $4,500 donated to Safe in Austin. Have you heard of them before this?
"I had not heard of them before this, so I had to look them up to see the work they were doing. I think it's really cool that the money is staying local in my community and helping so many animals and kids. That makes my heart full."
What are your plans for the bike? Is it a collectible thing or will we be seeing backflips from you soon?
"I want to hang it up in my office, but I'm not sure how I'm going to do it yet. It is a collectible for me. I have a few other things I have signed from Tool, Puscifer, Danny Elfman, and Alex Grey, so I want to put it together with that stuff. My son thinks I should be riding it around with him though!"
And that is how a bike I built in North Carolina and toured all over the USA and Canada and finally ended up in Austin, Texas. Thank you Dave for doing this for such a good cause and thank you Lisa for buying it! THE END.
